• Choosing The Perfect Domain Name

    Choosing the perfect domain names

Choosing a great domain name is THE most important part of your online business/presence. It's the address to everything about you and your business online so you must make it short and easy for people to remember.

There are great websites out there to help you with choosing the perfect domain, the main ones I use are www.namemesh.com and www.leandomainsearch.com, all you have to do with those sites is put in your keyword/s and it'll find what's available for you, make sure you spend time looking through the results as the right domain is sure to be there.

The following tips should also be followed when buying a domain, as failing to do so could result in bad SEO (search engine optimization) and horrible organic traffic:

These are in no particular order of importance, none the less, they are all important.

    1. Keep It Short: the shorter the better, nobody wants to type in a full sentence just to visit a website.
    2. Avoid Abbreviations and short hand: Don't use abbreviations at all, for example your website would fair better with  www.heretohelpyou.com than www.heretohelpu.com, you will be forever saying to people to spell the site with a U and not a You. Ain't no body got time for dat!
    3. Use Keywords: If your business is about charity or donations, consider putting it in your domain. It will help to improve your organic traffic.
    4. Avoid Numbers and Hyphens: Unless it has something to do with your business, avoid putting numbers and underscores in your domains as you'll be forever spelling it out like tip number 2.
    5. Domain Extensions: There is no doubt a .com is best, but consider a .net as a great alternative. If you are running a business from a particular country consider using your local TLD (top level domain) for example Australians should use a .com.au other examples are:
    • .co : an abbreviation for company, commerce, and community.
    • .info : informational sites.
    • .net : technical, Internet infrastructure sites.
    • .org : non-commercial organizations and nonprofits.
    • .biz : business or commercial use, like e-commerce sites.
    • .me : blogs, resumes or personal sites.
By using these tips you should be able to make the most of your online presence and get the exposure you deserve.

Pro Tip: Consider your social media URL when choosing a business name, I use www.knowem.com to check for availability of these vanity URL's, in this day and age social media is so important so don't miss out on this side of your business.

Want to check what your domain is worth? Godaddy have created a new tool (in beta) to check the market value: www.godaddy.com/domain-value-appraisal
